The “My Garden” and “Merry Christmas” quilts are made up of twelve
15” blocks of cotton fabric. The borders are cotton as well. All of the
appliqués are felted wool (mostly hand-dyed) with the exception of the border
vine on the garden quilt and the border loops on the Christmas quilt (the vine
is cotton bias strips with wool leaf appliqués, and the loops are cotton bias
strips with wool dots). This is a very easy quilt – all the appliqués are
whipstitched in place with 3 strands of embroidery floss! No turning, no
fusible web, no blanketstitching!
The block of the month runs for 13 months (one block per month, and an
additional month for the borders). The cost is $19.95 per month, charged to
your Visa or Mastercard, with the 13th month running $29.95 for the garden
quilt and $24.95 for the Christmas quilt. The cost includes all the patterns
necessary for the entire quilt, the pre-washed 100% wool fabric for all the
appliqués, and shipping costs. (Please note that since most of the wools are
hand dyed and fabric availability varies, there may be slight variations in the
wools from the original photo. But we always make sure the wools look great no
matter what!)
You are responsible for obtaining the cotton fabrics for the blocks, borders,
and bias strips. I wanted to make the quilt as much a scrap quilt as I could,
so I used whatever neutrals (garden quilt) and blacks (Christmas) I had in my
fabric stash for the blocks. You can piece wherever necessary to come up with a
15” block. It really adds to the look of the quilt to use a variety. Use very
tiny prints, textures, and plaids. Any cotton will do, but homespuns and
flannels with a little weight to them work best. Avoid anything on the thin and
flimsy side. It takes about 2 ¼ to 2 ½ yds. total yardage to do the blocks (the
patterns contain complete fabric lists for the borders, corner blocks, and bias
fabrics).
When you sign up, we will let you know what block-of-the-months are running.
You can choose to wait for the next to begin, or catch up with one already
running. The initial start dates are Nov. 1st, 2009, for the Christmas quilt,
and Jan. 1st, 2010, for the garden quilt.
